How to deal with a Bullying Situation: Tips for Parents and Students Read about how Theatre of Oppressed training is being used a Carolina Friends Middle School ARTICLE
The vision of Peaceful Schools NC is to create safe school communities, free from violence and fear of physical and emotional intimidation.
The mission of the Peaceful Schools North Carolina is to implement an evidence-based intervention, tailored to the resources and requirements of each participating school, which will reduce bullying, advance school safety and enhance collaboration among all school community members.
Peaceful Schools - NC is a project undertaken by the NC Psychoanalytic Foundation to explore and initiate programming in schools to support a peaceful learning environment. The focus of the programming from NCPF's perspective is to create an approach which contributes to the general mental, emotional, and physical health of the school and the community surrounding the school. Our work is inspired and guided by the "Create a Peaceful School Learning Environment Curriculum" developed by Twemlow, Fonagy, and Sacco for elementary schools. The CAPSLE approach offers the following advantages over other anti-bullying programs:
- The program involves of all components of the school community including students, teachers, guidance faculty, administrators, and parents.
- All students receive education in physical, mental, and emotional techniques for channeling aggressive impulses as well as for self protection. As a result students who have been bullies, victims, or bystanders are supported in creating non-violent solutions to problems. Students with special needs are included rather than excluded from the program.
- Bystanders, a group often ignored in other anti-bullying curricula, are empowered to act responsibly.
- Teachers receive training to support consistency of the program throughout the school day.
- Parents receive training to create a shared approach to solving the problems of violence in school.
- CAPSLE offers support materials and resources to help teachers implement the program at little or no cost.
- The program recognizes that there is no "one size fits all" curriculum, and that the needs of school communities vary.
The North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation is approaching this project in a number of different directions in order to grasp the full scope of the issues surrounded by Bullying. The following are activities you activities you can become involved in:
