Survival, Vision and Faith: Three Pillars of the Therapeutic Attitude

    Professional Workshop (9:00–10:30am)

The literature on psychotherapy and psychoanalysis focuses mainly on the speaking and listening activities of the therapist with little written about the development and sustenance of his or her attitude. This workshop will explore this new territory by describing three important components of the therapeutic attitude: survival, vision and faith. The description of each will be accompanied by a visual metaphor best capturing the attitude, developmental underpinnings, and clinical material.

    Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this 1.5 hour CME/CE program, participants should be able to:

    • Recognize examples from their own clinical work in which survival, vision and faith have been important attitudes, or when their lack has led to problems.
    • Develop ways to fine-tune and enhance their attitudes of survival, vision and faith with the goal of improving both their clinical work and personal well-being.

    The Trauma of Geographical Dislocation

    Professional Workshop (11:00am–12:30pm)

In many therapeutic dyads therapist, patient or both may not be native to the country in which the treatment takes place. We will discuss the burdens that geographical dislocation imposes upon individuals and look at the implications for therapy.

    Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this 1.5 hour CE/CME program, participants should be able to:

    • Understand the ongoing mourning and grieving for people and places left behind.
    • Understand the threats to security and self-esteem that come from being different from others and how these may impact psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.

Networking Lunch (optional and open to all)
    12:45pm-2:30pm

Pre-registration is required for the Networking Lunch. Tickets for the Lunch will not be available the day of the Event.

Join other participants for lunch at the Friday Center where you can continue discussing the morning’s topics or socialize with friends and colleagues.

    The Burdens of Sanity

    NCPF Seventh Annual Public Lecture

    3–5pm

Contrary to the popular notion that mentally healthy people live in a state of effortless bliss, mental health requires success at many developmental levels, requires work and a certain amount of good fortune. Dealing in healthy ways with oneself and others places responsibility on us in many facets of life including work, parenting, family and community.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this two hour program (2 CE/CME credit hours), participants should be able to:

    • Discuss the dynamic tensions of the sane existence—the tolerance of uncertainty and moral ambiguity.
    • Understand the importance to sanity of accepting one’s own mortality.
