Morning Programs (9-12noon)

Predictably Irrational

presented by Dan Ariely, PhD

Human behavior can be unpredictable even in the most predictable circumstances. This lecture will describe general principles of human irrationality, and will shed light on how these principles can make irrationality predictable and explainable.  We will work through some examples and applications of  these principles.

Bringing Positive Emotions to the Aid of the Mind and the Economy

presented by George Vaillant, MD

This lecture will raise the consciousness of the role of positive emotions in combating depression during these adverse economic circumstances. Despite what many of us think, happiness has very little to do with money.

Morning Program Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this three hour program (3 CME/CE credit hours), participants should be able to:

  • Describe some principles of human irrationality, including the effects of defaults, the role of choice complexity, and sensitivity to irrelevant alternatives.

  • Apply positive emotions in dealing with financial hardship and other personal problems.

  • Understand that happiness has very little to do with money

Networking Lunch (optional and open to all, 12:15-1:30pm)
Join friends and colleagues for lunch at the Friday Center. This networking lunch is an opportunity to join with other participants in continued discussion of the morning lecture or to simply socialize.

Do you want to advertise your practice to over 300 people at one time and receive a complimentary ticket to both the morning program and lunch? Consider sponsoring a table at our networking lunch. view details

Afternoon Workshop 2:00-5:00pm
Involuntary Coping Mechanisms

presented by George Vaillant, MD

Are we compelled to repeat the past?  This lecture will present examples of everyday crises and apply Freud's concept of unconscious defense mechanisms to them, thus gaining a better understanding of how to reckon with the unconscious forces which influence our lives.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this three hour program (3 CME/CE credit hours), participants should be able to:

  • Apply the concept of unconscious defenses to crises from everyday life: one psychosocial and one having to with money.

  • After proposing solutions to the crises, participants will also be able to identify the specific ego defense mechanisms involved in those solutions.

  • Participants will gain a common sense understanding of how the unconscious influences our lives.

Target Audience for Public Lecture
Open to the general public with particular relevance for mental health and other health and human services professionals, individuals, employers, finance and investment advisors, professionals, economists, health professionals and anyone who is affected by the current economic environment.
